Bangladesh registered only their second-ever ODI win over Australia, beating a depleted Australian side by 86 runs via the DLS method in the first match of the series in Mirpur on Tuesday.Returning to ODI cricket after four years, Mosaddek Hossain made an unbeaten 86 off 70 balls. Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 67, while opener Tanzid Hasan added 54 as Bangladesh posted 284/8.In reply, Australia were restricted to 191/9 in 42.2 overs before lightning and rain stopped play. Chasing 285, Australia still needed 94 runs from 46 balls when the match was halted and it could not be resumed. Cameron Green remained unbeaten on 52 off 66 balls.Fast bowler Nahid Rana led Bangladesh’s bowling attack with 4/41, regularly touching 140 kph. Mosaddek also contributed with the ball, returning figures of 2/37 from his 10 overs.Australia’s chase got off to the worst possible start when Matthew Short was bowled by Taskin Ahmed off the first ball of the innings. Marnus Labuschagne, who had scores of 0, 5 and 19 in the recent ODI series against Pakistan, managed only 1 before being dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman.Cooper Connolly scored 35 and shared a 49-run partnership with captain Josh Inglis (19) before adding another 40 runs with Alex Carey (47). However, Mosaddek dismissed Connolly and Rana struck three times in three overs during his second spell to put Bangladesh firmly in control.Mosaddek’s innings included seven fours and three sixes. He was dropped twice before reaching his half-century by Connolly and Oliver Peake, while Adam Zampa missed another chance when he was on 73.Shanto also survived an early chance on 9 before going on to register his 12th ODI half-century.For Australia, Nathan Ellis was the most successful bowler with 3/38 after also impressing in the recent Pakistan series. The victory was Bangladesh’s first ODI win over Australia since 2005. Australia had lost the ODI series against Pakistan 2-1 last week and are playing their first bilateral ODI series against Bangladesh in 15 years. The remaining two matches of the series will be played in Mirpur on Thursday and Sunday.
