A towering late header from Daichi Kamada denied the Netherlands victory and sent the Samurai Blue faithful into delirium as Japan snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw in their FIFA World Cup opener at AT&T Stadium in Texas on Sunday. With defeat looming, Japan produced one final twist in a pulsating contest when Koki Ogawa’s corner in the 88th minute found Kamada, whose header took a slight deflection before squeezing past Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. The equaliser capped a remarkable comeback and ensured both sides began their Group F campaign with a point.

Kamada’s late intervention stuns Dutch supporters

The Netherlands, unbeaten in World Cup group-stage matches for 17 games, looked destined to continue that run with maximum points after twice taking the lead in an entertaining second half. After a cagey opening 45 minutes, Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. Ryan Gravenberch’s delivery found the towering defender, who stooped low to guide a header into the far corner for his 13th international goal.Japan responded swiftly. Seven minutes later, Takefusa Kubo slipped a clever pass to Keito Nakamura, who turned brilliantly and rifled a shot beyond Verbruggen to level the scores. The Dutch regained control in the 64th minute when Crysencio Summerville received a pass from Gravenberch and drilled a left-footed effort into the bottom corner. The eighth-ranked side appeared on course for victory before Kamada’s late intervention spoiled the celebrations.

Second-half fireworks after quiet opening period

The first half offered few clear-cut opportunities despite the Netherlands dominating possession. Donyell Malen tested Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki early, while Japan struggled to convert promising set-piece situations. The game burst into life after the interval, producing three goals in 14 minutes and transforming the atmosphere inside the Dallas venue, where supporters from both nations created a vibrant backdrop. The Netherlands enjoyed close to 60 percent possession and managed six shots on target compared to Japan’s three. However, the Samurai Blue once again demonstrated their resilience and ability to strike when it mattered most.

Group F battle wide open

The draw leaves both teams with one point apiece heading into their second group fixtures. The Netherlands will face Sweden in Houston next Saturday as they continue their quest for a first World Cup title, while 18th-ranked Japan travel to Monterrey, Mexico, to take on Tunisia.
