Promised shipping jobs, took Rs 1.73 crore: 8 booked in Navi Mumbai scam

Thane Police have registered a case against eight persons, including the owners and employees of a shipping company in Navi Mumbai. On Thursday, officials told PTI the accused allegedly duped 75 job aspirants of Rs 1.73 crore by promising lucrative jobs.According to a Kharghar police station official, the accused allegedly ran the operation from their office in the area, where job seekers were targeted with assurances of high-paying roles. They allegedly collected Rs 1,73,81,400 from the unsuspecting job seekers over the last two months, but failed to get them the promised employment, the officer shared.According to police, when the victims began seeking updates or refunds, communication from the company abruptly stopped.The victims claimed that when they reached out to the company for updates or refunds, the accused stopped responding and cut off all communication.A formal complaint was lodged on Monday by one of the victims, who also provided details of all 75 affected individuals and the amounts paid by each of them.Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR under sections 318 (cheating) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official said.No arrests have been made so far, the official said, adding that a probe is underway into the case.
