NEW DELHI: High drama unfolded outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi on Tuesday as the Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, arrived to stage a sit-in protest, catching security personnel off guard.The Congress leaders demanded the resignation of PM Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, and education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.Rahul Gandhi also appealed to the public to join what was planned as an indefinite protest, following which leaders from other opposition parties joined the demonstration.Congress leaders tied plastic bands around their hands and raised slogans, protesting the government’s action.

The government sent Union minister Jitendra Singh and home secretary Govind Mohan to urge Rahul Gandhi and the Congress to call off the protest, citing the high-security nature of the area. However, the request was rejected.

Singh claimed that he informed Rahul Gandhi that the government had agreed to discuss the NEET paper leak issue in Parliament, following which the Congress MP “changed the goalpost” and demanded the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan.Eventually, Delhi Police detained Rahul Gandhi and other leaders participating in the protest.

The Congress claimed that Rahul Gandhi sustained a nose injury while in Delhi Police custody.

Meanwhile, party MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attempted to resist her detention by clinging to the door of a bus in which protesters were being taken away.

The dramatic protest came a day after Delhi Police and other security forces stopped a march by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to Parliament, with protesters demanding the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET (UG) paper leak. The CJP march, held on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, turned violent, leaving both protesters and security personnel injured.
