India’s weightlifting contingent added another Commonwealth Games medal on Sunday as Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched silver in the women’s 53kg final. It was India’s fourth weightlifting medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (women’s 48kg – gold), Rishikanta Singh (men’s 60kg – silver) and Muthupandi Raja (men’s 65kg – silver) had also finished on the podium in their respective categories. Weightlifting comprises two disciplines — the snatch and the clean and jerk — with each lifter getting three attempts in both.In the snatch, athletes lift the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous movement with a wide grip. In the clean and jerk, they first lift the bar to their shoulders (clean), pause, and then drive it overhead (jerk), holding it steady until the buzzer.Gyaneshwari lifted 88kg in the snatch to finish second. Nigeria’s Onome Didih led the field with 93kg, while Canada’s Groulx was third with 83kg.The standings after snatch:

  • Didih: 93kg
  • Gyaneshwari: 88kg
  • Groulx: 83kg

In the clean and jerk, Gyaneshwari successfully lifted 111kg. However, Didih managed 113kg to retain her lead and secure the gold medal, leaving the Indian lifter with silver. The 23-year-old from Bhondiya village in Chhattisgarh totalled 199kg (88kg snatch + 111kg clean and jerk) but Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih stole the show with a stunning 206kg (93kg + 113kg), rewriting both the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records to take the gold.It is the fourth weightlifting medal for India at the CWG and fifth medal overall.
