NEW DELHI: India captain Shubman Gill has returned to the summit of the ICC ODI batting rankings, reclaiming the world No. 1 spot after six months by overtaking New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell in the latest update released on Wednesday.Gill now leads the rankings with 801 rating points, replacing Mitchell, who slips to second with 794 points after missing New Zealand’s recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies.

Gill back on top after Mitchell’s reign ends

The ICC confirmed that Gill’s rise came after Mitchell’s absence from the Black Caps’ latest ODI assignment in the Caribbean.“There was some change at the top of the latest ODI rankings following the completion of the recent series between the West Indies and New Zealand as the absence of Black Caps’ right-hander Daryl Mitchell saw Shubman Gill move back to become the No.1 ranked batter in 50-over cricket,” the ICC said.The governing body also noted that “Mitchell had held the top billing since January this year.”Gill’s return to the top underlines his remarkable consistency in the 50-over format, where he has established himself as one of the game’s premier batters. The India skipper had previously occupied the No. 1 position before being overtaken by Mitchell at the start of the year.

Three Indians feature in ODI top five

India continue to dominate the upper echelons of the ODI batting rankings, with Virat Kohli retaining third place with 767 rating points, while Rohit Sharma remains fourth on 758 points.The latest rankings mean India now have three batters in the top five, highlighting the depth of their batting unit ahead of another busy ODI season.India also boast two more batters inside the top 20, with Shreyas Iyer occupying 13th place and KL Rahul ranked 18th.

Scholtz, Greaves among other big movers

Away from the batting charts, Namibia spinner Bernard Scholtz climbed five places to seventh in the ODI bowling rankings following an impressive showing during the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series involving Nepal and the Netherlands in Utrecht.In the Test rankings, West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves enjoyed significant gains after his historic performance against Pakistan in Trinidad. Greaves jumped 21 places to 48th among Test bowlers and also rose eight spots to ninth in the all-rounders’ rankings after producing five consecutive wicket maidens.There were also gains for Jayden Seales, who climbed to 24th among Test bowlers, while Pakistan pacer Mohammad Abbas rose to 17th. Babar Azam moved up four places to 15th in the Test batting rankings after registering his 32nd Test half-century.
