India win seven gold medals, three silver to cap record-breaking boxing campaign in Glasgow Commonwealth Games

India signed off from the boxing competition at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a record haul of seven gold medals after Narender won silver in the men’s 90+kg category on Saturday.Narender was outclassed by England’s Damar Thomas in the men’s 90+kg final, losing by a unanimous 0-5 decision to settle for the silver medal.India finished on top of the boxing medal standings with seven gold and three silver medals, registering its best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games.Earlier in the day, Ankush Panghal won India’s seventh gold medal after beating England’s Dimeji Shittu 4-1 in a split decision in the men’s 80kg final.The other Indian gold medallists were Sachin Siwach, Jaismine Lamboria, Preeti Pawar, Sakshi Chaudhary, Arundhati Choudhary and Priya Ghanghas. Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain and Jadumani Singh also finished with silver medals.In the men’s 60kg final, Sachin defeated Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo in a dramatic contest. After trailing in the first two rounds, the Indian forced a standing count in the final round and secured a 3-2 split decision.Lovlina Borgohain settled for silver after losing 1-4 in a split decision to Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree in the women’s 70kg final.Arundhati defeated England’s Chantelle Reid 5-0 by unanimous decision in the women’s 70kg final.Preeti claimed gold with a 5-0 win over Canada’s Scarlett Delgado in the women’s 54kg final. Reigning world champion Jaismine then defeated Northern Ireland’s defending champion Michaela Walsh 5-0 in the women’s 57kg final.Sakshi beat England’s Ruby White 5-0 in the women’s 51kg final to win India’s third boxing gold of the day.Priya overcame Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh 4-1 in a split decision in the women’s 60kg final.Jadumani lost 0-5 to Australia’s Jye Dixon in the men’s 55kg final.After struggling against his taller opponent early in the bout, Jadumani recovered to win the opening round 3-2. However, Dixon responded by taking the second round 5-0 and carried that momentum through to seal the victory.Jadumani had reached the final after defeating Namibia’s Philip Haoseb 5-0 in the semifinals on Friday.In the women’s 57kg final, Jaismine edged a close opening round by split decision before taking the second round unanimously after landing several clean punches.
