'This is Indian sport at its finest': Shreyas Iyer applauds team India's 39-medal CWG campaign

India wrapped up its Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign in fourth place on the medals table, finishing with an impressive 39 medals: -13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze.As the curtains came down on the Games, India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer lauded the country’s athletes for their remarkable performances, with special praise reserved for the boxing contingent, which scripted history by topping the boxing medals table with a record-breaking haul of seven gold and three silver medals.Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Iyer congratulated the athletes for their outstanding achievements and hailed their efforts in inspiring the nation.“What a Commonwealth Games for Team India! Our boxers dominated Glasgow, bringing home a haul of gold and making the nation proud. Huge congratulations to all our champions and para trailblazers for inspiring the nation. This is Indian sport at its finest. Proud of every athlete who wore the tricolour,” Iyer wrote.

Sport-wise medal breakdown

India’s 39-medal haul at the Commonwealth Games 2026 was powered by standout performances across five disciplines, with the boxing contingent delivering the country’s best-ever showing by finishing on top of the boxing medal table.The sport-wise medal tally is as follows:

  • Boxing: 7 Gold, 3 Silver (10 medals)
  • Athletics (including Para Athletics): 3 Gold, 7 Silver, 6 Bronze (16 medals)
  • Judo: 2 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze (4 medals)
  • Weightlifting: 1 Gold, 6 Silver, 1 Bronze (8 medals)
  • Para Powerlifting: 1 Bronze (1 medal)

Total: 13 Gold, 17 Silver, 9 Bronze – 39 medals

Shreyas Iyer recovered from a setback

Shreyas Iyer’s tenure as India’s T20I captain has had its share of ups and downs. After taking over the leadership role, India endured a difficult start, suffering a 0-2 series defeat to Ireland followed by a 0-4 loss in the five-match series against England. However, the team bounced back strongly by defeating Zimbabwe in the three-match T20I series in Harare. Iyer’s most recent international appearance came in the series finale on July 26, 2026, where he scored 27 runs to help India register a series-clinching victory.
