Thailand shooting: 71-year-old former MP opens fire at government building

A local government official was hospitalised after being shot at a government office in Nonthaburi, on the outskirts of Thailand’s capital. A gunman was arrested following the incident, which came days after a teenager’s deadly shooting rampage at a school in the same province renewed debate over gun control.Provincial police commander Major General Dejrapee Kongdee said the suspected gunman, a former lawmaker, opened fire on a senior provincial official and his driver.”There were two people ​wounded, ​who have been sent to ⁠hospital for treatment,” Dejrapee was quoted as saying. Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for a “conducive environment” to improve ties with India, as Dhaka continues to seek New Delhi’s cooperation on the extradition of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Rahman made the remarks during his first meeting with India’s new high commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi.His comments come as his six-month-old government seeks to stabilise relations with Bangladesh’s largest neighbour while addressing several contentious issues that emerged after Hasina was removed from power in August 2024.
