Dhruv Jurel’s second Test century was as much about his roots as it was about his growing confidence with the bat.After completing a composed unbeaten 115 against Sri Lanka on a rain-hit second day, the India wicketkeeper-batter unveiled a tattoo on his left bicep carrying the words ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’, a tribute to his family and the values he grew up with.“My grandfather was a farmer and my father a soldier. I don’t want to forget my roots and that celebration was for them,” Jurel told reporters on Monday after his memorable knock.The celebration came at the end of a patient innings that showcased Jurel’s temperament. He faced 177 deliveries, remained largely risk-free and helped India recover from 307 for six to post a commanding 503 for nine declared.His most important partnership came with Rishabh Pant, with the pair adding 112 runs for the seventh wicket.Pant, who had retired hurt on three after being struck during the first Test, battled through another difficult period before making 63. Jurel said the physios were assessing Pant after he was hit on the right shoulder, while also acknowledging the influence of his senior teammate.“Pant is a terrific player. I always ask him what I should do in different situations,” Jurel added.Jurel eventually reached his century in 171 balls after rain had interrupted his progress on 95. Once he crossed the landmark, he accelerated, hitting Fernando for two sixes before India captain Shubman Gill declared on 503.The innings also reflected Jurel’s ability to handle interruptions, something he has become accustomed to in a rain-affected series.“I am used to the stop-start. I was looking to build partnerships,” he said.Yet despite the satisfaction of reaching three figures, Jurel was quick to keep his achievement in perspective.“When you represent India, there are butterflies. I scored 100 today but start on zero tomorrow,” he added.With India reducing Sri Lanka to 8 for two by stumps, Jurel’s hundred had put the visitors firmly in command, while his celebration offered a glimpse into the personal story behind the batter’s latest landmark.
