IPL 2026: KKR's next coach decided? Kevin Pietersen makes bold prediction

NEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders are enduring a nightmare run in IPL 2026, still searching for answers after slumping to their fifth defeat of the season. They sit rock bottom with just one point, which came from a rain-hit fixture against Punjab Kings. The 2024 champions have faltered across departments – batting, bowling and fielding – and the frustration has been visible on captain Ajinkya Rahane and his teammates in the dugout.Amid the slide, former England batter Kevin Pietersen made a bold call, predicting a major coaching shake-up. He suggested that KKR could turn to their former coach Brendon McCullum next season.“Baz McCullum will be the coach of KKR next season. Bookmark this tweet,” Pietersen said.KKR had already revamped their coaching setup ahead of IPL 2026, appointing Abhishek Nayar as head coach in place of Chandrakant Pandit, but the move hasn’t delivered results so far. McCullum, meanwhile, is currently serving as England’s head coach and remains contracted until the 2027 World Cup.McCullum has a long association with KKR, having played for them between 2008–2010 and again from 2012–2013. He later returned as head coach from 2020 to 2022, guiding the franchise to the IPL 2021 final.KKR’s struggles this season are reflected in the standings. They are yet to win a match, losing five out of six games, with one no-result, and hold a net run rate of -1.149. Their defeats have come against Mumbai Indians (6 wickets), Sunrisers Hyderabad (65 runs), Lucknow Super Giants (3 wickets), Chennai Super Kings (32 runs) and Gujarat Titans (5 wickets), painting a grim picture of their campaign so far.

What did Rahane say?KKR captain Rahane admitted it was another demoralising defeat but chose to focus on the positives.“It’s never easy to come out and talk immediately after losing a game. But I’d like to focus on the positives. The way we started, losing three wickets early, it was tough,” said Rahane after the five-wicket loss.“Cameron Green’s innings was outstanding, he was under pressure, but the way he counterattacked and took on their bowlers was amazing to see. At 147 for 4, getting to around 180 was slightly difficult for us as a batting unit,” he added.“I still want to credit our bowlers. It’s not easy when things aren’t going your way, but they kept coming back and pushing hard.”
