NEW DELHI: The Bhartiya Janata Party’s Jiban Gogoi secured victory in Assam’s Sissiborgaon constituency after 19 rounds of counting. The constituency seat saw BJP’s Jiban Gogoi take on Rajjor Dal leader Dulal Chandra Boruah. Gogoi secured victory with a margin of 40,593 votes as he garnered 75,758 votes in total.Multiple exit polls had predicted the BJP-led government to achieve a comfortable majority, pointing to Himanta Biswa Sarma’s continuation as chief minister. Polling for all 126 seats was conducted on April 9, with turnout exceeding 85%, among the highest in recent years. The significant voter turnout was observed across both rural and urban areas, indicating broad-based participation across the state.Sissiborgaon is a newly formed assembly constituency in Assam’s Dhemaji district, created during the 2023 delimitation as one of the 126 seats, with elections scheduled for April 2026.As of March 2026, there is no current MLA since the previous legislative term has ended, and it was carved from parts of earlier constituencies like those in Dhemaji without a direct 2021 predecessor specified in records.Key issues include intense pre-poll activity with BJP holding back its candidate announcement amid releasing 88 names, Congress-Raijor Dal alliance allocating the seat to Raijor Dal, and broader rural challenges such as infrastructure development, flood management, and ethnic dynamics typical of Dhemaji’s tea and tribal areas ahead of the single-phase polls.
