'It’s been 5 days': Daren Sammy hits panic button as tensions in Middle East leave West Indies stranded in India

NEW DELHI: The West Indies cricket team are facing travel troubles after being knocked out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India. Due to rising tensions between Israel and Iran, several airspaces in the Gulf region have been restricted, forcing airlines to cancel or reroute flights. As a result, the West Indies squad has been stuck in India for several days without clear information on when they can return home.

Head coach Daren Sammy expressed his frustration on social media as the uncertainty continued. “I just wanna go home,” he had penned earlier today. In another post a few hours later, he wrote, “At least an update, tell us something. Today tmw, next week. It’s been 5 days,” highlighting the anxiety within the team.Earlier, Cricket West Indies confirmed that the team’s travel plans had been postponed because airlines were avoiding the affected airspace due to safety concerns. In a statement, the board said, “These restrictions are a direct result of the security threats posed by military action in the Gulf Region, which has impacted several international flight routes and required airlines to adjust scheduled services for safety reasons.”The board also reassured fans that the safety of the players and staff is the top priority and that it is working with the International Cricket Council and other authorities to arrange a safe return. “CWI is working closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC), relevant governmental authorities, and airline partners to secure the earliest possible safe travel arrangements for the squad and support staff,” the statement added. The West Indies were eliminated after losing to the India national cricket team at Eden Gardens. India chased down 195 with a strong unbeaten 97 from Sanju Samson.
