J&K man booked for posts on protests over West Asia war

SINAGAR: J&K police have registered an FIR against a man running the Instagram page “Master Electrician” over posts related to recent protests about the ongoing war in West Asia.In a statement, police said the content was provocative and intended at disturbing law and order in Kashmir.This is the first time after recent widespread protests in Kashmir over the killing of Iran’s Supreme leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei that the police have officially acknowledged lodging an FIR in the matter.

According to the police statement, Chadoora police station in Budgam received information that Suhail Ahmad Bhat, a local resident, had uploaded videos on his Instagram account “Master Electrician” related to a recent protest over the ongoing situation in West Asia. “The videos were aimed at provoking youth and the general public, thereby posing a potential threat to public order,” the police said, without disclosing the content of the page. “Accordingly, an FIR has been registered and investigation initiated.”Police have asked people to refrain from sharing unverified or provocative content on social media.On Tuesday, police had said a case had been registered against National Conference MP Ruhullah Mehdi and former mayor of Srinagar Junaid Azim Mattu for “circulation of false, fabricated and misleading content across digital and social media platforms with the intent to create fear, disturb public order and incite unlawful activities.” However, police had not mentioned the recent protests. The FIR was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Cyber Police Station in Srinagar.
