Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell have been formally warned over their conduct following a nightclub incident during England’s pre-Ashes tour of New Zealand last year, in a development that once again brings focus on off-field discipline within the squad. The action was taken by the Cricket Regulator, an independent body responsible for upholding professional standards in English cricket. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the regulator confirmed that both players had received caution notices after admitting to breaching conduct rules.

The controversy dates back to November 1, on the eve of a one-day international in Wellington. Brook was initially involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer and had claimed at the time that he was alone during the incident. However, the matter resurfaced two months later, leading to further scrutiny.Brook was subsequently fined £30,000 by the England and Wales Cricket Board and handed a final warning. He later revised his account, admitting that Bethell and fast bowler Josh Tongue were also present. Brook acknowledged that he had not told the full truth earlier, explaining that he did so in an attempt to shield his teammates, and issued a public apology.Despite the incident, both Brook and Bethell featured in the ODI the following day, a match England lost by two wickets, completing a 3-0 series whitewash. No disciplinary action was taken against Tongue, as he was not part of the ODI squad at the time.“The Regulator issued a caution notice to Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell in relation to their conduct,” the statement read, adding that both players had accepted their breach of professional regulations. The episode has drawn attention partly because Brook continues to hold a leadership role. Many observers felt he was fortunate to remain captain for the T20 World Cup, where England reached the semi-finals before losing to India in Mumbai.

Should players face stricter consequences for off-field conduct?

It also adds to a broader narrative surrounding England’s off-field behaviour during that period. Their Ashes tour of Australia, which ended in a 4-1 defeat, had already attracted criticism over preparation standards, selection decisions, and what was described in reports as a “drinking culture” within the squad.Images of players spending extended periods at bars during a mid-series break, along with a viral video involving Ben Duckett, had further fuelled the debate. However, following a review by the ECB, key figures including Test captain Ben Stokes, head coach Brendon McCullum, and director of men’s cricket Rob Key retained their positions.
