Drop at your own peril: Teams pay heavy the price for dropped catches

NEW DELHI: Catches win matches, is an old adage in cricket , and rightly so. One moment of brilliance in the field can change the course of a game. But equally, one dropped catch can prove costly – sometimes even haunting captains and teams for a long time. The most famous example dates back to the 1999 World Cup when Herschelle Gibbs dropped Steve Waugh on 56. It was a straightforward chance, but the miss proved decisive. Waugh went on to score an unbeaten 120, guiding Australia into the semi-finals. That moment is still remembered as one of the most expensive mistakes in World Cup history, with Gibbs later famously quoted in cricket folklore for that lapse. In IPL 2026, similar moments of fielding lapses once again proved how crucial catches can be.Not once, not twice, but multiple times across matches, dropped chances had a massive impact. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, in sweltering heat, Delhi Capitals were both beneficiaries and victims of fielding errors in a high-scoring encounter that turned into a run-fest on Saturday.

Opener KL Rahul was handed a lifeline early in the third over when he was on 12. He flicked a delivery towards deep square leg, where Shashank Singh was stationed, but the Punjab Kings fielder dropped a sitter, allowing the ball to run away to the boundary.Rahul made full use of the reprieve. He went on to smash an unbeaten 152, helping Delhi Capitals post a massive 264/2 – their highest-ever IPL total. His knock became the third-highest individual score in IPL history, behind Chris Gayle’s 175* (For Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Pune Warriors India, 2013) and Brendon McCullum’s 158* (For Kolkata Knight Riders vs RCB, 2008). Rahul’s 152* also stood as the highest IPL score by an Indian. However, despite the towering total, Delhi Capitals ended up on the losing side, as Punjab Kings chased it down with 7 balls to spare and 6 wickets in hand. The turning point?A series of dropped catches that proved fatal for Delhi Capitals.Among them was a crucial moment in the 15th over when Karun Nair dropped Shreyas Iyer off Vipraj Nigam. Iyer was on just 29 at that stage, with Punjab at 203/4. That miss proved extremely costly. Nair did not just drop a catch – he dropped the match. Iyer capitalised fully, scoring an unbeaten 71 off 36 balls to script a stunning heist and derail Delhi Capitals’ hopes. On the same day, another high-scoring thriller unfolded between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.Young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again showed his destructive potential. Early in his innings, he launched into his trademark attack, but Sunrisers Hyderabad missed a key opportunity when Aniket Verma dropped him at deep mid-wicket off Eshan Malinga. Sooryavanshi was on 32 at the time. From there, there was no stopping him. He smashed 103 off just 37 balls, registering his second IPL century, an explosive knock featuring 12 towering sixes. In the same match, Rajasthan Royals also suffered in the field while defending their total. Ravindra Jadeja, usually one of the safest fielders in world cricket, put down a sitter off Tushar Deshpande’s bowling, giving Abhishek Sharma a lifeline. Abhishek went on to score a crucial 57, helping Sunrisers Hyderabad complete a five-wicket win.Across the Super Saturday clashes, one theme stood out clearly – massive totals were posted, but equally massive mistakes in the field changed outcomes. On Friday, in the RCB vs GT fixture, Washington Sundar dropped Virat Kohli off the batter’s first delivery faced at mid-wicket – a straightforward chance. Kohli went on to score a clinical 81 as RCB chased down 205. Catches do win matches, don’t they?
