'Eternal voice of civilisation': PM Modi pays tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on 'pochishe boishakh'

Prime minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of Pochishe Boishakh (25th day of the Bengali month Boishakh), marking the birth anniversary of the Nobel laureate.PM Modi described Tagore as a timeless voice of India’s civilisational ethos whose ideas continue to inspire generations.On the occasion, celebrated annually as Rabindra Jayanti, PM Modi hailed the poet’s enduring contributions to literature, philosophy, education and culture.“Today, on this special day of the twenty-fifth of Baishakh, we offer our heartfelt reverence to Gurudev Tagore. Gurudev Tagore was an extraordinary literary figure, thinker, and poet endowed with exceptional talent. He established himself as a unique philosopher, educator, artist, and the eternal voice of Indian civilisation. Through his works, he has given eloquent expression to the deepest human emotions and the greatest ideals of our culture. With fresh ideas, creative energy, and cultural self-confidence, he enriched our society,” PM Modi said through a post on X. West Bengal chief minister-elect Suvendu Adhikari also paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary, describing the Nobel laureate as an “eternal star” in the world of Bengali literature and culture.In a post on X, Adhikari said Tagore’s “immortal creations, humanitarian philosophy, and patriotism” had continued to guide generations through the ages.Pochishe Boishakh, observed on the 25th day of the Bengali month of Boishakh, commemorates Tagore’s birth anniversary and remains one of the most significant cultural occasions in West Bengal and among Bengali communities across the world.Observed on the 25th day of the Bengali month of Boishakh, the occasion marks the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, whose contributions as a poet, novelist, playwright, songwriter and philosopher left a lasting imprint on Bengali literature and culture. Celebrated widely across West Bengal, the day is marked by cultural programmes, recitations and tributes honouring Tagore’s enduring legacy and influence across generations.The Prime Minister’s tribute came on a politically significant day for the state, with the BJP poised to form its first government in West Bengal after securing a decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as chief minister on Saturday after the party won 207 seats, ending the All India Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.Several senior BJP leaders, including Rajnath Singh, J P Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan, arrived in Kolkata ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, along with Himanta Biswa Sarma and Manik Saha.Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday announced Adhikari as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party in West Bengal, following which he met Governor R N Ravi to stake claim to form the government.
