Germany have suffered a major blow ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with teenage midfield sensation Lennart Karl ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a serious thigh injury during training. The 18-year-old Bayern Munich prodigy suffered a torn muscle bundle in the front of his left thigh during Germany’s final training camp in Chicago. The injury occurred just days before Germany’s opening World Cup match and ahead of a pre-tournament friendly against the United States.Karl was immediately taken to a local hospital for medical assessment, with MRI scans confirming the severity of the injury and ending his hopes of featuring in the tournament.Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann had initially expressed concern after the incident.“It didn’t look so good,” Nagelsmann said shortly after Karl was forced to leave training. The fears were soon confirmed, and Germany moved quickly to replace the midfielder. Under FIFA regulations allowing injury replacements before the start of the tournament, RB Leipzig midfielder Assan Ouédraogo was called into the squad as Karl’s replacement.

Heartbreak for Germany’s Youngest Star

Karl took to Instagram to express his devastation after learning he would miss the biggest tournament of his career.“I have no idea where to start, but it’s just indescribably painful being forced to miss the biggest tournament of all,” Karl wrote. “I’ve done everything to be fit for the World Cup. Unfortunately, injuries often come at the unluckiest time.”The Bayern Munich youngster made his senior Germany debut in March and quickly established himself as one of the country’s most exciting emerging talents. He earned three international appearances and played a key role in Germany’s impressive 4-0 victory over Finland last week. His performances had earned him a place in Germany’s World Cup plans despite his young age, with many viewing him as one of the breakout stars of the tournament.

Germany’s World Cup Campaign

Germany will begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey in Group E and remain among the favourites to challenge for the title despite Karl’s absence.Their group-stage schedule is as follows:June 14: Germany vs Curaçao – Houston Stadium, TexasJune 20: Germany vs Ivory Coast – Toronto Stadium, OntarioJune 25: Germany vs Ecuador – New York New Jersey Stadium, New Jersey
