Morocco made FIFA World Cup history on Sunday by becoming the first team to field a starting XI made up entirely of players born outside the country. The milestone came on a memorable night for the North African side as they held five-time champions Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their Group C opener at MetLife Stadium. The match also highlighted Morocco’s long-running approach of bringing together players from its global diaspora. Every member of the starting XI was born outside Morocco but chose to represent the country of their family roots.Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was born in Montreal, Canada. Defenders Achraf Hakimi and Chadi Riad were born in Madrid and Palma in Spain, while centre-back Issa Diop was born in Toulouse, France. Full-back Noussair Mazraoui was born in Leiderdorp in the Netherlands. The midfield featured Ayyoub Bouaddi, born in Senlis, France, alongside Nancy-born Neil El Aynaoui. Bilal El Khannouss and Chemsdine Talbi were born in Molenbeek and Sambreville in Belgium respectively.Further forward, attacking midfielder Ismael Saibari, born in Terrassa, Spain, and striker Samir El Mourabet, born in Strasbourg, France, completed the historic line-up.

Would you prioritize youth development in Moroccan football moving forward?

Morocco backed up the record with a strong performance against one of the tournament favourites. They started on the front foot and took the lead in the 21st minute when Saibari finished a well-worked move after Brazil struggled to deal with the early pressure.Brazil responded in the 32nd minute through Vinicius Jr, whose goal ensured the teams went into the interval level at 1-1.The second half remained evenly contested, with both sides creating opportunities. Goalkeepers Bono and Alisson made a number of saves as neither team could find a winner despite combining for 27 shots during the match. The result underlined the success of Morocco’s strategy of integrating players who developed through academy systems in countries such as France, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands before choosing to represent Morocco at international level. After the match, Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi expressed confidence in the future of Moroccan football following his team’s display against Brazil. The draw leaves Morocco and Brazil with one point each in Group C. Morocco will next face Scotland, while Brazil will take on Haiti.
