Union minister Joshi launches green hydrogen certification portal, urges states to boost mission

NEW DELHI: Launching the green hydrogen certification portal Wednesday, new and renewable energy minister Pralhad Joshi urged states to actively participate in advancing National Green Hydrogen Mission. The portal, unveiled during a national workshop on strengthening the green hydrogen mission, will facilitate transparent certification and regulatory compliance under Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India. He added that the regulatory framework had been streamlined through the launch of the certification scheme and the finalisation of standards for green ammonia and green methanol in recent months.Joshi said six states had already notified dedicated green hydrogen policies, four were in the process of finalising them, while seven others had integrated hydrogen into their existing industrial and renewable energy policy frameworks.Giving details of efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing of green hydrogen, the minister said financial incentives had been awarded to 15 companies to establish 3,000 MW per annum of indigenous electrolyser manufacturing capacity, reducing dependence on imported supply chains. He also said that contracts had been awarded for the supply of 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen to state-run oil refiners, while Rs 84 crore had been sanctioned for pilot projects testing 100% hydrogen injection in the steel sector. The minister also informed that nearly Rs 208 crore had been allocated to support 37 hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and nine refuelling stations, besides an investment of over Rs 193 crore across seven national testing facilities. The National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched in 2023 with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore. He highlighted that the mission had taken a significant step towards reducing import dependence, with agreements signed for the supply of 6.7 lakh MTPA of green ammonia to 11 fertiliser plants.
