While the top two teams from each group automatically progress to the knockout stage, they will not be alone. The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups will also advance, completing the 32-team knockout bracket. That means 24 teams will qualify directly by finishing in the top two of their groups, while another eight will secure their places through the third-placed ranking table. The remaining four third-placed teams, along with the 12 bottom-placed sides, will be eliminated.

How are the best third-placed teams ranked?

Once all group-stage matches are completed, FIFA will compare the records of the 12 teams that finish third in their respective groups. The ranking criteria are applied in the following order:

  • 1. Greatest number of points obtained in all group matches.
  • 2. Superior goal difference in all group matches.
  • 3. Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
  • 4. Highest team conduct ranking, determined by yellow and red cards received by players and team officials.
