ICC ODI rankings: Joe Root re-enters top 10, Rohit Sharma closes gap on Virat Kohli

England’s 2-1 ODI series triumph over India has been rewarded in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, with veteran batter Joe Root returning to the top 10 after a sensational series in which he remained unbeaten throughout.Root, who was named Player of the Series, produced unbeaten scores of 76, 99 and 74 to anchor England’s first bilateral ODI series victory over India since 2018. His consistency has lifted him four places to No. 8 in the ICC rankings, marking his return to the top 10 for the first time since 2020.England opener Ben Duckett was another major beneficiary after his record-breaking 141 in the third ODI at Lord’s. The left-hander jumped 11 places to joint-19th, with his match-winning knock becoming the highest individual score in a Men’s ODI at the iconic venue, according to an ICC media release.

Rohit, Gill and Kohli remain among top 5

Despite India losing the series, several Indian batters made gains in the latest rankings following strong individual performances.Rohit Sharma’s magnificent 138 in the Lord’s decider helped him reduce the gap on Virat Kohli to just nine rating points. Rohit remains fourth in the ODI batting rankings, while Kohli occupies third. India captain Shubman Gill continues to hold the No. 2 position and is just one rating point behind New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who remains the world’s top-ranked ODI batter with 802 rating points.Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer also climbed two places to 13th after scoring a fighting 66 in the second ODI at Cardiff.

England seal first ODI series win over India since 2018

England clinched the three-match ODI series 2-1, registering their first bilateral ODI series victory over the world’s No. 1-ranked side since 2018. After India won the opening game, Harry Brook’s men responded with back-to-back victories to seal the series.1st ODI – Edgbaston, Birmingham (14 July)India began the series with a convincing six-wicket win after chasing down 259. Axar Patel starred with four wickets, while Shubman Gill anchored the chase with an unbeaten 80 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.2nd ODI – Sophia Gardens, Cardiff (16 July)England bounced back in Cardiff with a four-wicket victory. Joe Root once again held the innings together with a composed unbeaten 99 as England successfully chased 234 to level the series.3rd ODI – Lord’s, London (19 July)The decider turned into a run-fest as England piled up a record-breaking 387/3, the highest ODI total ever recorded at Lord’s. Ben Duckett smashed 141, eclipsing Sir Viv Richards’ long-standing record for the highest individual ODI score at the venue, while Jacob Bethell contributed a fluent 91 during a mammoth 192-run opening stand.India fought back through Rohit Sharma’s brilliant 138 off 110 balls, but Sam Curran’s four-wicket haul and timely breakthroughs halted the chase as England secured a 27-run victory and the series.
