'Don't waste time': SC nixes plea against police lathicharge on Jantar Mantar protesters

NEW DELHI: A Supreme Court bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana Wednesday declined to accept an advocate’s suggestion that it take suo motu cognisance of the police action against protesters at Jantar Mantar. The bench said the advocate shouldn’t waste his own as well as judicial time on issues not before the court. When the advocate said he had video footage of the violence and police lathicharge, and would file it for viewing by the court, the bench replied, “We do not want to watch videos during judicial work.”Meanwhile, Supreme Court Bar Association led by senior advocate Vikas Singh passed a resolution condemning the “brutal lathicharge on innocent students”.“The use of excessive and disproportionate force against peaceful students and members of bar is deeply disturbing and wholly unacceptable in a democratic society,” said the resolution, passed 600 members of SCBA, without mentioning stone pelting and damage to public property by protesters. It sought an “immediate, impartial and time-bound inquiry into the incident, identify those responsible for excessive use of force” for appropriate action in accordance with law and measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
