TimesofIndia.com in Colombo: India captain Shubman Gill is unlikely to feature in India’s ongoing three-day warm-up fixture at the NCC. Gill took a blow to his finger while training on the eve of the match and didn’t take the field on the opening day. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) called it a “precautionary measure” after the impact injury to his right ring finger.Gill came to the ground with the rest of the team and observed proceedings from the makeshift dugout with the support staff members. He showed no visible discomfort and remained in high spirits, raising hopes that he might bat on the second day. When Yashasvi Jaiswal was out for a duck, attention shifted to the Indian camp as Devdutt Padikkal walked out to bat. To everyone’s surprise, Gill, India’s No.4, was still in his training gear and was gently strolling near the ropes with the support staff. After some laps, the Indian captain went straight to the nets where some players were batting and kept a close eye on Gurnoor Brar. The two statemates had a lengthy discussion on batting before the throwdown specialists tested the lanky seamer.TimesofIndia.com has learnt that while Gill’s finger is in a good shape, the management doesn’t want to take any chances with the captain. Following discussions after play on Day 1, the management decided the right-hander will sit out this fixture to be absolutely ready for the Galle Test, from August 15.The Indian team will be in Colombo for a day after the warm-up ends and will then head to Galle on August 11 to begin preparations for the series opener.
