The foundations for India’s imposing target were laid by Rishabh Pant, who produced another typically adventurous Test innings. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 66 and reached his fifty in only 53 balls, combining his trademark strokeplay with valuable runs under pressure. His six off Lahiru Kumara brought up his half-century and also marked his 100th six in Test cricket. Pant became the first Indian and the quickest batter to reach the milestone. He added 54 runs with Ravindra Jadeja before eventually nicking Kumara behind.
Devdutt Padikkal, who had scored 167 in the first innings, continued his excellent form with a fluent 44. He attacked Sri Lanka’s spinners confidently before Keshara Nuwantha trapped him on the back foot. KL Rahul contributed 35, including two sixes against Prabath Jayasuriya, but was eventually dismissed by the spinner after India’s second-wicket partnership with Padikkal had added 65 runs.
India’s innings also featured early and important wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal edged Asitha Fernando in the first over, while Shubman Gill was dismissed leg before by Jayasuriya. India lost several wickets late in the innings but had already established a commanding advantage.
Sri Lanka’s chase then unravelled quickly. Siraj dismissed Nishan Fernando, Prasidh removed Kamindu Mendis, and Suthar struck twice. Pasindu Sooriyabandara, replacing the injured Dinesh Chandimal as a concussion substitute, lasted only one delivery before being trapped lbw. Suthar later dismissed Lahiru Udara as India tightened their grip on the Test.
With rain forecast for the final day, India will hope to complete the remaining six wickets and move 1-0 ahead in the two-Test series.
