NEW DELHI: Ali Usman gave Pakistan a big boost with a five-wicket haul, but England still took a commanding 238-run lead in the first Test at Headingley on Friday. England, who resumed Day 3 on 366-8, were bowled out for 409 in 89.5 overs. Their lower order added 43 runs, with Jofra Archer scoring 23 before England lost their final two wickets.Usman was Pakistan’s standout bowler. He finished with 5/95 from 24 overs and claimed his first five-wicket haul in England.The left-arm spinner also became the first visiting left-arm spinner since Shakib Al Hasan in 2010 to take five wickets in a Test innings in England.Usman was also the first visiting spinner to take a five-wicket haul at Leeds since Australia’s Ashley Mallett took 5/114 in 1972.

Usman removes England’s key batters

Usman played a major role in keeping England from posting an even bigger total. He dismissed Jordan Cox for 73, Harry Brook for 91, Dan Lawrence for 51, Gus Atkinson for 3 and Ollie Robinson for a duck.Brook’s 91 was the highest score for England, while Cox and Lawrence also scored half-centuries.

Archer adds crucial runs

England’s lower order made an important contribution after the hosts started the day on 366-8. Archer remained unbeaten on 23 off 25 balls, hitting two fours and a six.Jamie Smith was dismissed for 25 after miscuing a pull off Khurram Shahzad to midwicket. Josh Tongue was the last England batter to fall, bowled by Khurram for 8.Khurram finished with 3/133, while Mohammad Abbas took 1/78 and Mohammad Ali claimed 1/89.Pakistan were earlier bowled out for just 171 in their first innings.
