BCCI AGM in Mumbai on September 18 to discuss associate membership for Andaman & Nicobar Islands

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold its Annual General Meeting at its headquarters here on September 18, as per a notification sent by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia to the member associations. One of the key items on the agenda is the nomination of India’s representative to the International Cricket Council (ICC).Interestingly, one of the items on the agenda is the “grant of associate membership to Cricket Association of Andaman & Nicobar Island of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.”The proposal had come up for discussion at an earlier Apex Council meeting of the BCCI and will now be placed before the AGM for consideration. If approved, the move would bring the Union Territory into the BCCI fold. Associate membership, however, does not carry voting rights. It will, though, provide a pathway for Andaman & Nicobar to feature in India’s domestic cricket calendar.Currently, 38 teams feature in the Board-approved domestic tournaments. The meeting will also see the election of two General Body representatives to the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI will also induct one representative of the Indian Cricketers’ Association into the IPL Governing Council. The meeting is expected to ratify the appointment of the new five-member junior selection committee, for which the BCCI had recently taken out an advertisement. There is intense speculation that chairman of the senior selection committee Ajit Agarkar will no longer continue in his role and that a former India cricketer will become India’s new chief selector.
