NEW DELHI: World champion D Gukesh is known for his calm expression and ice-cold composure at the chessboard. That is exactly why his emotional celebration after defeating Javokhir Sindarov at the Grand Chess Tour Super Rapid and Blitz 2026 tournament in Poland instantly grabbed attention across the chess world on Wednesday. The Indian grandmaster rarely shows outward emotion during games, but moments after sealing victory against the Uzbek prodigy, Gukesh pumped his fist while still seated at the board, a rare glimpse into how much the win meant to him.

The victory carried extra significance because this was his first meeting with Sindarov since the Uzbek emerged as Gukesh’s challenger for the World Championship later this year.Watch the celebration here:The result also came at an important time for Gukesh. The reigning champion had recently stepped away from the main Grand Chess Tour circuit to focus on preparation and regain rhythm ahead of defending his world title. Questions had been raised about his form after a disappointing loss to Poland’s Radoslav Wojtashek in the previous round. Sindarov too entered the clash after suffering defeat against tournament leader Wesley So.But against his future title rival, Gukesh looked completely locked in.Playing with the black pieces, the Indian chose the Caro-Kann Defence and confidently entered a sharp, dynamic position after Sindarov opted for an unconventional setup. The aggressive approach suited Gukesh perfectly. As the middle game unfolded, the Indian gradually seized control, winning a pawn before capitalising on Sindarov’s risky attacking attempts. The pressure slowly shifted entirely onto the Uzbek grandmaster. Gukesh calmly absorbed the attack, picked up more material and simplified the game after the queens were exchanged. From there, the result never appeared in doubt as the Indian converted his advantage smoothly in 52 moves. The emotional fist pump at the end perhaps revealed more than words could. This was not just another tournament victory for Gukesh. It was an early psychological statement against the player who hopes to take his world crown later this year.
