Uttar Pradesh is rapidly transforming its sporting landscape with an ambitious push to build infrastructure from the grassroots to the international level. Under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath, the state government is focusing on stadium development, local facilities and major event hosting to make sports a mainstream culture across regions.A key part of this vision is expanding cricket infrastructure. Uttar Pradesh already boasts two prominent international venues — Green Park Stadium and BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium — both of which have hosted top-tier matches, including IPL and World Cup fixtures. A third international stadium in Varanasi is nearing completion and could soon host high-profile matches, while the government has also approved a fourth international venue in Gorakhpur, with work already underway. From international venues to village groundsBeyond marquee stadiums, the government’s strategy extends deep into rural areas. The aim is to ensure access to basic sporting infrastructure at the grassroots level, with plans for cricket grounds in villages and mini stadiums at the block level. This approach is designed to widen the talent pool and provide opportunities for young athletes across the state.ALSO READ: University, academies, infrastructure drive new sports culture in UPThough work is ongoing and comprehensive data is still emerging, multiple districts have already begun developing such facilities. The state has actively hosted major sporting events to build a vibrant sports culture. From international cricket matches in Lucknow and Kanpur to global events like MotoGP in Greater Noida, the state is steadily positioning itself as a sporting destination.Lucknow has also hosted Davis Cup ties, while events like the Khelo India University Games and the UP T20 League are being organised regularly. These competitions not only provide exposure to athletes but also create enthusiasm among fans and local communities.ALSO READ: UP’s big push for sporting excellence, rewards and jobs power athletes’ riseThe Ekana Stadium, in particular, has emerged as a key venue in India’s cricketing map, hosting matches during the 2023 ODI World Cup. With the Varanasi stadium expected to be operational soon, Uttar Pradesh could become one of the few states with three international cricket venues.Expanding horizons across disciplinesThe state is also investing in diverse sporting disciplines. In Gorakhpur, the development of Ram Taal as a water sports hub has already seen national-level events being conducted. Facilities in cities like Ayodhya are also being upgraded, even if they do not yet meet international seating standards.Encouraged by growing infrastructure and event-hosting capability, the state government is now aiming higher. Both Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union minister Rajnath Singh have expressed intent to bid for the National Games in the future — a move that would further cement Uttar Pradesh’s status as a major sporting centre. With a combination of world-class stadiums, grassroots facilities and regular sporting events, Uttar Pradesh is building a robust ecosystem aimed at making sports an integral part of everyday life. The state’s long-term vision is clear: to create a culture where sporting ambition thrives from villages to global arenas.
