SRINAGAR: Ahead of the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror strike, security has been heightened across the Kashmir Valley. Officials said vigilance has been stepped up and precautionary mechanisms have been fortified, but efforts are underway to avoid unnecessary public alarm. On April 22, 2025, terrorists struck the scenic Baisaran meadow, also known as “Mini Switzerland”, about 7km from Pahalgam town in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, killing 25 tourists and a local ponywallah. In the aftermath, around 44 tourist destinations across J&K were closed as a precaution. Most have since reopened, but authorities have kept Baisaran closed to visitors. In Pahalgam, Chandanwari also remains shut. Officials said there is no clear timeline for reopening Baisaran.Senior officials on Monday reviewed the security situation in different areas. South Kashmir DIG Javaid Iqbal Mattoo visited Pulwama district and chaired a “comprehensive crime and security review meeting”.“During the meeting, a detailed review of the overall crime scenario, investigation of cases, NDPS matters, and preventive measures was conducted. The DIG reviewed the prevailing security scenario with special focus on counter-terrorism efforts and strengthening of the anti-terror grid in the district,” a police spokesperson said, adding that emphasis was laid on enhanced coordination among security agencies, intensified area domination, and strengthening of intelligence networks to thwart any attempts by anti-national elements.Officers were directed to maintain a high level of alertness and ensure a prompt and effective response to any security challenges, the spokesperson said. Mattoo also visited the police district Awantipora and chaired a security review meeting. In Srinagar, SSP Dr G V Sundeep Chakravarthy chaired a security review meeting. “The overall crime scenario of district Srinagar was reviewed in detail. Threadbare discussions were held to enhance the quality of investigation and prosecution in cases registered under the UAP Act, the NDPS Act, and general crime categories, with a focus on improving conviction rates,” the police spokesperson said.
