Rishabh Pant loses Test vice-captaincy, Prince Yadav gets ODI call-up - key points from India's squad announcement for Afghanistan series

NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced squads for the one-off Test and the three-match ODI series vs Afghanistan, both set to be played in the month of June in India. KL Rahul replaced Pant as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team that is being led by Shubman Gill. Senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been rested for the Test match. While Manav Suthar, Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey were the new faces included in the Test squad. Among the notable inclusions for the ODI series was fast-bowler Prince Yadav, who has had a brilliant season playing for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2026.

Here are key points from the squad announcement:

Jasprit Bumrah and Jadeja rested

  • India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah rested from one-off Test and ODI series against Afghanistan as part of his workload management.
  • Senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja rested from one-off Test against Afghanistan as well as from the ODI series.

Gurnoor, Manav Suthar get maiden call-ups

  • Spin bowler Manav Suthar and pacer Gurnoor Brar have earned maiden call-ups to the Test squad. Both are teammates at IPL franchise Gujarat Titans.

Rahul gets Test vice captaincy

  • Flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was removed as vice-captain of the Indian Test squad.

Prince gets ODI call-up; Ishan Kishan returns

  • While Prince Yadav is the new face in the ODI line-up, with Ishan Kishan being the second wicket-keeper.

Harsh Dubey picked in both squadsThe chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said Dubey is the perfect fit to play the bowling all-rounder role. He says he has impressed in domestic cricket and hopes he can take the chance provided in the senior team.
