Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed serious concern over Pakistan’s current Test side after their comprehensive defeat against England at Headingley, saying he had rarely seen them look so short of confidence and fight.England needed less than three days to complete an innings-and-103-run victory in the opening Test, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Pakistan were dismissed for 171 in their first innings and then folded for 135 in the second, spending just 85.4 overs at the crease across the match.Vaughan was particularly troubled by the manner of Pakistan’s capitulation rather than simply the margin of defeat. Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, he said: “They’ve been absolutely blown away. They’ve been hammered. I’ve never seen them look so timid.”He also questioned Pakistan’s overall performance, pointing to shortcomings in their tactics and the difference in quality between the two sides.“The tactical side wasn’t there. The skill level and the class between the sides, Pakistan look a long way short,” Vaughan said. “I hope they can find something over the next couple of days. They’ll get criticised, and rightly so; hopefully, that will force them to find something.”England’s dominance was built around a disciplined pace attack and a strong batting effort. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue claimed five wickets each in Pakistan’s first innings, while Jofra Archer struck early in the second innings before Robinson and Tongue returned to dismantle the lower order. Both Robinson and Tongue finished with eight wickets in the match. Robinson was named Player of the Match after figures of 8/80, while Tongue took 8/89.England’s batters had earlier put the hosts in complete control after they posted 409, securing a 238-run lead. Harry Brook scored 91, Jordan Cox made 73, Joe Root contributed 66 and Dan Lawrence added 51.For Vaughan, Pakistan’s decline in intensity was especially disappointing given the aggressive identity traditionally associated with their cricket.“I look at this side and feel quite sad watching them this week,” he said. “I’ve seen many Pakistan sides play, and this side just seem to be lacking all that spirit and fight we’ve come accustomed to seeing.”The defeat also marked the beginning of a new era for England under returning captain Root following the retirement of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s departure as Test coach.Pakistan will now have several days to regroup before the second Test at Lord’s begins on Thursday. England, meanwhile, will look to carry their momentum into the next match as they attempt to extend their series advantage.
