Mitchell Starc unleashes havoc as Australia bowl Bangladesh out for 64 after Darwin disaster

Australia bounced back from their nine-wicket defeat in the first Test at Darwin by bowling Bangladesh out for just 64 on the first day of the second and final Test in Mackay on Saturday.After winning the toss, Australia captain Pat Cummins chose to bowl first, and Mitchell Starc made an immediate impact. The left-arm fast bowler finished with 6/12 after completing the sixth-fastest five-wicket haul in Test cricket.Bangladesh were in trouble within the first session. Starc took five wickets in the first 45 minutes as the visitors slipped to 12/5 before reaching lunch at 35/6.Starc struck with the first ball of the match, dismissing opener Shadman Islam. The delivery moved in before leaving the left-hander, who edged it to Cameron Green at gully.It was the fourth time Starc has taken a wicket with the first ball of a Test innings, after dismissing Dimuth Karunaratne, Rory Burns and Yashasvi Jaiswal in previous matches. It was also the ninth time he had taken a wicket in the first over of a Test.Shadman became only the second Bangladesh opener to be dismissed off the first ball of a Test innings after Hannan Sarkar, who suffered the same fate three times against West Indies fast bowler Pedro Collins, as per Cricinfo.Starc picked up his second wicket in his next over when Tanzid Hasan guided the first ball to Beau Webster at second slip. Tanzid, who scored a century in the previous Test, registered his second consecutive duck after that innings.Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was trapped lbw with the very next ball. He reviewed the decision, but it stayed with Starc on umpire’s call.Starc missed out on a hat-trick, but Mominul Haque soon became his fourth wicket after edging a wide delivery to Green at gully.The fifth wicket came in Starc’s next over when Litton Das was given out lbw for a duck. Webster had dropped Litton off the previous delivery before Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger. TV umpire Richard Illingworth confirmed the decision after the review.Bangladesh’s score of 12/5 became their lowest total after losing five wickets in a Test innings.Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz then resisted for the next 10 overs, mostly through defensive batting, before Cummins broke the stand by bowling Mushfiqur for five.Cummins also dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 11 after he was caught in the slips and later had Taskin Ahmed caught at square leg for one.Josh Hazlewood added the wicket of Hasan Mahmud for 10.Bangladesh’s lower order managed to take the total past 50 after the top order collapsed. Starc returned to end the innings by having Shoriful Islam caught behind for 14, wrapping up Bangladesh’s innings for 64.
